I-77 South Express Lanes
Charlotte, NC, USA | NCDOT
2025–Present | DBFOM
Project Description
The I-77 South Express Lanes Project is a major transportation initiative aimed at improving mobility and reducing congestion along the southern portion of the I-77 corridor in the Charlotte metropolitan area. The project will widen approximately 11 miles of Interstate 77 by adding two managed express lanes in each direction between the South Carolina state line and I-277 / NC-16 (Brookshire Freeway).
The project includes interchange modifications, bridge construction, and direct access points to the managed lanes, improving travel reliability, regional connectivity, and freight mobility along one of the most heavily traveled commuter corridors in North Carolina.
Once complete, the project will expand the regional express lanes network in the Charlotte region, supporting improved corridor operations and long-term mobility for commuters and freight traffic.
